About this Entry
upside down
So, I just read my friend Moses' entry about wanting to be in musical theatre and how it's a tough industry, etc. And it actually got me thinking about my senior thesis and about my own track in life. The other day I was talking about going to grad school in public policy to a friend of mine and she asked why i would be interested in going into politics when it has such a bad rap.

The thing is, participatory democracy gets me all warm and fuzzy inside. The idea that we can all make a difference in the way that our country is run, each of us a unique and important part of a community that's interested in maintaining civic responsibility. Wow.

I think that's the same feeling of being on stage having everyone applaud the piece you just performed perfectly. And maybe we have to go through failed campaigns, corrupt politicians, and low voter turnout the same way that actors have to go through a thousand auditions before they get a part.

I guess I just mean that it's important to love what you do, and maybe aspiring political activists are just as foolhardy as aspiring actors, but that doesn't keep us from trying.
